Soilless culture not only ensures that the germination of acorn seeds is successful but also provides a convenient way to transfer the seedlings to the soil when they are ready.
To start with, you will need to gather the essential materials for this activity. These include acorn seeds, plant growing cubes, a container for the cubes, and water.
First, take the acorns and remove the caps. Do not remove the shells from the acorns as they provide protection for the embryos inside.
Next, place each acorn in a separate hole in the plant growing cube. Be sure to plant the acorns with the pointy end facing downward and the flat end facing upward. Press the acorns slightly into the cubes to help secure them in place.
Once you have planted all the acorns, place the container with the plant growing cubes in a warm and well-lit area. Acorns prefer temperatures between 60-68°F and indirect sunlight.
Keep the growing cubes moist by watering every other day or as necessary. Avoid overwatering as this may lead to the rotting of the acorns.
After two to three weeks, you should start to see sprouts emerging from the acorns. Keep an eye on the seedlings and continue to water them regularly until they have grown to about 3-4 inches tall.
Once the seedlings have grown to this height, they are ready to be transplanted to soil. Carefully remove the plant growing cubes from the container, and place them in a hole in soil that is slightly larger than the cube.
Cover the base of the plant growing cube with soil, ensuring that the root structure of the seedling is well covered. Water the newly transplanted seedlings frequently, initially every other day, and decrease gradually as they grow and mature.
Planting acorn seeds using plant growing cubes in soilless culture is an effective method for producing healthy young trees. With proper care and attention, your acorn seedlings will soon become robust trees that can provide shade and beauty to your landscape for years to come.
